Who says you have to go to Tuscany to drink good wine? When in Rome, why not drink vino as the Romans do — at the source? After a food tour with an expert local guide in the storybook town of Frascati, discover the true heart of Italy as you experience the workings of a family-run vineyard, taste three of its locally acclaimed wines and then enjoy a relaxing lunch in a local trattoria.
Upon arrival in Frascati begin your tour at a locally renowned 16th-century farmhouse, vineyard, and winery where you’ll enjoy a guided visit by the owners, proud winemakers for multiple generations. Tour the wine cellar and Roman-era caves, then see how age-old winemaking traditions have been maintained through the years and incorporated into the modern production of today’s highly sought-after DOCG wines (don’t worry, you’ll even learn what all those initials mean!).
After a walk through the vineyard, relax and take in the unforgettable view of the rolling hills and Rome in the background while enjoying a guided tasting of three wines; Frascati Superiore, Red Vagnolo, and Sweet Cannellino. Each wine is described in detail and accompanied by delectable local extra virgin olive oil and baked goods from the local bakery.
After bidding a reluctant farewell to the winery, return to historic Frascati for a walking tour of the local shops and botteghe. Here you’ll taste celebrated local delicacies such as roasted pork (porchetta), focaccia, biscotti — just out of the antique wood-fired oven — and jug wine from the oldest tavern in town to name a few. Be sure to save room for lunch (and of course, more wine) in a hand-picked local trattoria. After your meal, the train station is just a few steps away for your return to Rome.
